Mr. & Mrs. Jackson's Inclusive Home
[PROJECT DESCRIPTION]

Mr. and Mrs. Jackson.
A couple that both have health issues that makes it inconsiderately hard in finding their perfect functional home.
Throughout my studies I have learnt of the term inclusivity, basically stating that we should consider for people with disabilities when designing a space.  Although, according to Elise Roy, she stated in a TEDtalk that when we design for disability, we design for all types of individuals, for when it is easy enough to function for a disabled individual, a normal individual would find it even easier and pleasing to function with.

Thus, for this project, the idea was to create a space that is functional for Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, but also any other potential individual who would inhabit the space.

SPATIAL REQUIREMENTS
The couple has bought a house which needs minor changes due to level changes and overall spatial requirements for the wheelchair. Ideally the design of the home should consider each of their illnesses/disabilities.
They have suggested that the kitchen and vertical levels are some of the aspects they struggle with in their daily lives.

Phase 1_Analyse the Clients
Phase 1_Define Problem Statement
Phase 3_Design an Inclusive/Accessible Space

MY OUTCOME
Accessibility usually alters good design. Good aesthetic design should not be taken for granted with accessible design. Thus, it became my second goals to have a luxurious, functional space.

[RESEARCH]

As a disabled user  [USER TYPE], I need/want better functional spaces to accommodate spatial struggles associated with being a wheelchair user and a Parkinson’s disease-infected user. [USER NEED] so that I could live peacefully and easily within my home space [USER GOAL].

“How Might We” Approach:
Issue: The couple struggled to find a house that could suit their special needs in terms of manoeuvrability/spatial relationship and accessibility.

How Might We?
Design the space with more space for them to circulate through the house?
How Might We?
Consider the bathroom layout to accommodate both Mr. and Mrs. Jackson?
How Might We?
Design the kitchen for both the primary and secondary users to function.
How Might We?
Design issues regarding level changes within the space?

“The 5 W’s” Approach:
WHO does the problem affect?
The problem affects the homeowners, Mr & Mrs. Jackson. Mr. Jackson being in a wheelchair and Mrs. Jackson having Parkinson’s Disease.

Who is our primary and secondary users?
The primary users are the two homeowners being Mr. & Mrs. Jackson.
The secondary users include housekeepers, nurses, and any family members/guests they might have.

WHAT are the boundaries of the problem?
What is the issue?
The couple struggled to find a house that could suit their special needs in terms of manoeuvrability/spatial relationship and accessibility.
What is the impact of the problem/ What will happen if we didn’t solve the problem?
Without making design alterations to suit the primary users needs, they would not be able to function properly within their space and in the end could cause physical and mental problems for them being able to achieve every day, basic tasks.
What is the ultimate goal?
The end goal is to create a space in which the primary users could use the space as naturally and easy as possible for them. Not only does this achieve comfortability with the primary users but the in the end it should be accessible for any type of person to use, disabled or non-disabled.
What are some of the background info we need?
Research has been done on tips and tricks we need to know about both of their conditions in order to design a space suited for their needs.

WHEN does the problem occur/need to be fixed?
Occur?
The problem occurs within their everyday life, especially when they try and use the BATHROOM, KITCHEN and basic manoeuvrability within VERTICAL CIRCULATION.

WHERE: HOW does the site affect the problem or where do you need the most focus?
The main struggle the couple experiences are within the BATHROOM and the KITCHEN.
Another task they seem to struggle with is VERTICAL CIRCULATION.

WHY is it important?
It is imperative that the basic accessibility/spatial requirements are considered for the couple to work happily and uncomplicated within their space. the home should be a safe and comfortable space to function within. Not only does accessibility design affect these primary users but in turn will help create an even easier space for the secondary users.
